En 2004, Hiroshi Sugimoto réalise la série Conceptual Forms, regroupant les Mathematical Forms et Mechanical Forms.
Les Mathematical Forms, abordent une thématique importante dans l’oeuvre de Sugimoto : explorer la relation entre les idées - qui mènent le photographe à la réalisation de ses oeuvres - et la forme qu’elles prennent. Lorsque Sugimoto inscrit les Mathematical Forms dans les ‘formes conceptuelles’ il élabore une antinomie; la forme et les idées appartenant à deux univers antithétiques, celui de la matérialité et celui de l’abstraction.
Ce projet débute à l’Université de Tokyo lorsque Sugimoto découvre des modèles scientifiques; une série d’objets mathématiques réalisés en Allemagne vers 1880 ainsi qu’un groupe d’objets mécaniques fabriqués en Angleterre vers 1870. Il est attiré par des formes stéréométriques en plâtre à vocation didactique datant du milieu du XIXème siècle, et qui permettaient d’illustrer de nouvelles formules mathématiques à l’époque mystérieuses.
Man Ray s’était également intéressé aux formes nouvelles générées par ces modèles mathématiques. Sur les conseils de Max Ernst, il avait entreprit de photographier les objets mathématiques que ce dernier avait découvert dans la réserve de l’institut Henri Poincaré. Les tirages de Man Ray furent publiées en 1936 dans la revue Cahiers d’Art, dont Sugimoto possède un exemplaire.
En réalisant ces tirages, Sugimoto offre une nouvelle lecture des formes stéréométriques, pour n’en souligner que l’immobilité et l’abstraction dans laquelle les volumes et les courbes de plâtre se détachent du fond noir. Le format des tirages choisi par l’artiste est une volonté délibérée afin de rendre monumental des objets dont les plus grands ne mesuraient pas plus de trente centimètres.
A propos de Mathematical Forms, Sugimoto affirme: “They were made without any artistic intention, this is what motivated me to produce this series of photographs […] art is possible without artistic intentions and it can be better without it”. Cette affirmation quasi Duchampienne - dont l’inspiration est fondamentale pour le photographe - résume l’esprit des Mathematical Forms, images d’objets d’application pratique sublimés qui accèdent au statut d’oeuvre d’art. A l’instar de Marcel Duchamp, Sugimoto a artistiquement codé des objets qui sont à l’origine la traduction en image de formules mathématiques.
En se tournant vers les mathématiques, un aspect de la pensée universelle, Sugimoto prolonge son intérêt pour les sciences, déja manifeste lorsqu’il réalise trente auparavant au musée d’Histoire Naturelle de New York la série Dioramas.
In 2004, Hiroshi Sugimoto created the series Conceptual Forms, grouping together Mathematical Forms and Mechanical Forms.
The Mathematical Forms address a key theme in Sugimoto’s work: exploring the relationship between ideas – which lead the photographer to create his works – and the form they take. By placing the Mathematical Forms within the Conceptual Forms, Sugimoto composed an antimony, with form and ideas belonging to two antithetical universes: that of materiality and that of abstraction.
This project began at the University of Tokyo when Sugimoto discovered scientific models: a series of mathematical objects made in Germany around 1880, and a group of mechanical objects manufactured in England around 1870. He was attracted by stereometric forms in plaster, made in the mid-19th century for the didactic purpose of illustrating new mathematical formulae that were difficult to grasp at the time.
Man Ray also took an interest in the new forms generated by these mathematical models. On the advice of Max Ernst, he set about photographing the mathematical objects that Ernst had discovered in the reserve collection of the Institut Henri Poincaré. Man Ray’s prints were published in 1936 in the magazine Cahiers d’Art, a copy of which Sugimoto owned.
In making these prints, Sugimoto offered a fresh reading of the stereometric forms, focusing solely on their immobility and on the abstract qualities of the plaster’s bulk and curves which stand out against the black background. The format chosen by the artist for the prints was deliberately intended to confer a monumental aspect to the objects, the largest of which measured no more than thirty centimetres.
Concerning the Mathematical Forms, Sugimoto stated, “They were made without any artistic intention, this is what motivated me to produce this series of photographs […] art is possible without artistic intentions and it can be better without it”. This statement, somewhat reminiscent of Duchamp, whose inspiration was fundamental for the photographer, sums up the spirit of Mathematical Forms, images of objects with a practical purpose, now transformed and raised to the status of works of art. Like Marcel Duchamp, Sugimoto artistically encoded objects that were originally mathematical formulae in visual form.
By turning to mathematics, an aspect of universal thought, Sugimoto was continuing to pursue his interest in science, already evident thirty years previously when he made the Dioramas series at the Museum of Natural History in New York.
