Lot Essay

Pierre Carreau’s images celebrate the power and majesty of the natural world. In #1926 – Number 1 the artist captures the infinite iterations and sublime unpredictability of a giant wave as it crashes onto shore. The monumentality of the looming body of water is offset by the fragile beauty of the light refracted through the single droplets of water that are suspended in mid-air on the wave’s leading edge. The effect of this play of light gives the image a sculptural quality, enhancing its sense of stillness and power. Going straight from camera to printing – Carreau does not employ any digital manipulation – he produces an image which reminds us of the raw power of nature, and the important role humans have to play in keeping it pristine. The present work was included in the Saatchi Gallery’s 2019 exhibition Kaleidoscope.
