One of the most important avant-garde composers of the post-war period, Ligeti was from 1973 professor of composition at the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater. After earlier focuses on micropolyphony and sonorism Ligeti had by this period switched his concentration to rhythm, and the present manuscript with its constant repetition of very small clusters in shifting combinations is highly representative.
