Lot Essay

The small image of Lakshmi, from the region of Orissa in Eastern India, is cast with all of the refinement and beauty found in the more well-known Pala images from the regions of Bihar and Bengal. The tight row of lotus petals is typical for Orissan works from this period, as are the large, ornate earrings, and the angular crown. Compare the image of Lakshmi from this group with a bronze figure of Gajalakshmi, illustrated by E. Fischer in Orissa: Kunst und Kultur in Nordost-Indien, Zurich, 1980, p. 164, fig. 333. The figure of Vishnu, also from the region of Orissa, is more characteristic of the later style of around the sixteenth or seventeenth century, when the proportions of the figure and facial features become more exaggerated and stylized.
