Jade-hilted daggers, or khanjar, were commonly carried by Mughal noblemen to signify power and opulence. The present khanjarcomprises a ‘pistol grip’ jade hilt, with a elegantly curved single-edge blade. The tempered steel blade carries a finely marbled pattern. The hilt is engraved with floral splays which sprout from leaf-like quillons and wrap around gold roundels at the top. The style of khanjar and engraved motifs closely resemble a khanjar sold at Christie’s London, 12 June 2018, lot 44 for GBP 6,000.
