Lot Essay

Paintings of gopis and maidens swinging on an outdoor hindola are associated with the hot, humid monsoon season, when the breeze is a necessity for keeping cool. The subject is quite popular in Kangra painting. Compare the present lot to another painting of women on hindol aat the National Musuem, New Delhi, published in M.S. Randhawa, Kangra Paintings on Love, New Delhi, 1962, p. 132, pl. XV.
