The present painting of a red Tara is likely from a set of paintings depicting the twenty-one Taras according to the teachings of Atisha (982-1054). According to that tradition, all twenty-one Taras are depicted in the same manner, with the only variation being the color of their skin. In the present painting, Tara sits on a lotus base at center, with an image of Buddha at top center flanked by Yellow Hat lamas, with two additional lamas at the lower corners.

There are a few areas of horizontal creasing. There are areas of pigment loss throughout, particularly in the sky. Pigments are dark, possibly from smoke exposure.
