Lot Essay

The present painting depicts the deity, White Jambhala, depicted seated on the back of a snarling and coiled Chinese-style dragon. This form of Jambhala descends from the teachings of Atisha (982-1054), and according to that tradition, is considered an emanation of the bodhisattva, Avalokiteshvara. This unusual horizontal-format painting includes an arhat-like figure at left and the Four Harmonious Brothers (the partridge, hare, monkey, and elephant) at right, all amidst a verdant, Chinese-style landscape with persimmon trees and snow-capped mountains. The image of Jambhala holds a trident in the proper right hand and a jewel-topped staff in the proper left; the dragon on which he sits is shown striding on a lotus base in front of a palace.
