拍品专文

Arthur Wardle was a British artist known for depicting a variety of animal subjects. Wardle’s work can be divided into two categories of animals: domestic creatures, and those from overseas.

This drawing shows the king of the animal kingdom at rest, with one eye open to keep lookout. Wardle was known for working from sketches that he had made from animals at London Zoo, and this could be one such drawing. Wardle revisited the subject of the lion in a famous Parliamentary Recruiting Committee WWI poster, urging men from the British Empire to enlist in the war effort.
