Lot Essay

In 1859 the first of a small number of ports was opened for trade with foreigners. Not long before his death, Kuniyoshi designed this view of the main streets of Yokohama - the closest of these ports to Edo (now Tokyo). Foreigners from various countries can be seen mingling in the street.
