In the mid 1930s, Cartier Paris introduced the double-clip brooch with a black lacquer bracelet fitting, which turned out to be a best selling line across all the three houses. This extended the wearability of the jewels, allowing brooches to be worn as a bracelet or a double clips - and this versatility was hugely popular in the inter-war years. The use of black lacquer was used in jewellery as a substitute for enamel, the benefit being it didn't chip or crack as easily and importantly, was flexible. Rings in this form are rare, and this example highlights Cartier's originality and mastery of the monochromatic glamour of the 1930s.
