拍品專文

The agate in this pendant has been carved by the world renowned Bernd Munsteiner (1943-2024), a master stonecutter from near Idar-Obenstein. He is credited with creating the fantasy-cut, in which asymmetric cuts or negative shapes were carved into the back of a gemstone to create a spectacular display from the front. In the case of the present lot, Munsteiner has carved into the various bands of the agate, revealing the graduation of colours from black through to greyish-brown and finally to white. This is part of a series of carved agates by Munsteiner that Grima set into pendants in the early 90s, each displaying a different pattern depending on the natural banding of the agate.
