Lanciato nel 2002, il 'Celestial' possiede una delle più importati complicazioni nel mondo dell’orologeria. Questo orologio da polso astronomico prende spunto dai celestiali e più complessi orologi mai prodotti da Patek Philippe – ref. 5002, Sky Moon Touorbillon.
Il cielo notturno dell’emisfero nord ruota in modo da mostrare l’apparente movimento angolare delle stelle e della luna; è compresa anche la progressione delle fasi lunari. Ore e minuti sono indicate da due lancette bianche. All’interno del vetro, il delicato contorno ellittico mostra il cielo visibile da tutte le città focalizzandosi però sulla latitudine di Ginevra. Per mostrare la più alta accuratezza nei dettagli astrologici, gli ingegneri di Patek Philippe hanno ricercato 25 trilioni di proporzionate combinazioni per rappresentare così l’immensità della sfida orologiaia che questo modello rappresenta.

L’estremamente sofisticato movimento automatico calibro 240 LU CL è composto da 301 parte individuali, meticolosamente rifinite a mano dagli artigiani di Patek Philippe. I tre dischi in radici di zaffiro simulano l’orbita della luna e il passaggio delle stelle, così da ricreare un senso di profondità. All’azienda fu garantita la Patente Svizzera CH 688171 B5 per il modulo meccanico che viene mostrato sul quadrante astrologico.

La referenza 5102 fu lanciata nel 2002 solo in oro bianco. Nel 2007 è stato sostituito in oro giallo, gli esemplari in oro giallo sono circa in totale 200. È stato poi sostituito nel 2009 con la variante in oro rosa e in platino. La produzione cessò nel 2012 quando fu rimpiazzato dalla referenza 6102. Secondo la nostra ricerca, il presente lotto non è mai stato presentato sul mercato.

Launched in 2002, the ‘Celestial’ is one of the most important horological complications ever developed. This astronomical wristwatch borrows the principle of the celestial canopy from the most complicated wristwatch ever produced by Patek Philippe - reference 5002, the Sky Moon Tourbillon. The nocturnal sky of the northern hemisphere rotates to show the apparent angular motion of the stars and moon as well as the progression of the phases of the moon. Hours and minutes are displayed by two pierced white hands. A delicate elliptical contour on the inside of the glass frames the portion of the sky visible from all cities sharing the latitude of Geneva. To determine the highest possible accurateness for the astronomical displays, the engineers of Patek Philippe researched 25 trillion (25,000,000,000,000) ratio combinations, showing the enormous horological challenge the model represents.

The highly sophisticated automatic movement calibre 240 LU CL consists of 301 individual parts, meticulously hand-finished in the workshops of Patek Philippe. Three sapphire crystal discs are used to simulate the orbit of the moon and the passage of the stars, hence rendering it a remarkable sense of depth. For the mechanical module for the astronomical displays the firm was granted Swiss Patent CH 688 171 B5.

Reference 5102 was launched in 2002 in white gold only. In 2007 it was replaced by the yellow gold version of which a total of approximately 200 examples was made. It was substituted in 2009 by the pink gold and platinum variant. Production ceased in 2012 when it was replaced by reference 6102. According to our research, the present lot is fresh to the market.
