The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas is held under tension and remains structurally stable. The relining has caused some flattening of the surface of the paint layer, with some abrasion and thinning, particularly in the darker passages and browns. Ultraviolet examination reveals a thick layer of varnish, with a larger restored damage visible in the upper left corner and more minor scattered restoration throughout, as well as infilling of the craquelure. The artist's expressive and painterly technique remains highly appreciable, and the work is in a good state of preservation.
