拍品的状况可能存在极大差异，而由于其性质使然，拍品难以处于完美无瑕的状态。拍品均以拍卖时的状况出售。

The canvas has been lined and is on its original stretcher, which is providing good support. There is some craquelure and some surface dirt. The varnish appears to have discoloured in places.

Under UV light, there appear to be two different campaigns of restoration. The earlier one shows retouching to the sky. In particular in the upper centre and to areas of the left and right headlands and to some of the sails of the smuggler's ship and the boats in the distance. There is also some infilling to craquelure. The later restoration shows some retouching to frame abrasions, mainly at the lower and upper edge.
