AUGUSTE ALPHONSE GAUDAR DE LA VERDINE (BOURGES 1780-1804 SIENA)
Auguste Alphonse Gaudar de La Verdine studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris under François-André Vincent (1746-1816). In 1799, he won the first Grand Prix de Peinture for Manlius Torquatus Condemning His Son to Death, now in the collection of the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Paintings by the artist are quite rare, as he died shortly after his appointment to the Académie de France in Rome at the Villa Medici, at the age of twenty-four from an unknown disease.

This oil on paper is laid down on canvas and is stable on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable with a wide craquelure under a clear varnish. Some of the cracks, especially in the center of the canvas in hair of the figure and the stag, have been filled to minimize their visual impact – these repairs are visible in natural light. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed further retouching to minimize the appearance of the craquelure and feathered touches along the extreme edged at the left and right sides of the canvas. Pigments in the sitter’s hair fluoresced orange in ultraviolet light. The painting presents well overall hand can be hung in its current condition. The work is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
