Lot Essay

Joseph Redl became a student at the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1786, beginning his studies under the Classical painter Herbert Maurer (1738-1818) and later, after 1794, under the portraitist Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder (1751-1830). By 1820 Redl had become a professor of painting. He is known as the one of the last classical painters at the Vienna Academy.
