The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is supported by a glue lining and is secure on its stretcher. The paint layer is stable under a slightly dirty varnish which has yellowed with age. There is a fine craquelure across the surface. There is an area of feathered retouching to Jupiter’s upper right thigh and surrounding area is visible in natural light, ultraviolet light and in the catalogue image. Further feathered retouches to the extreme left edge and to the background at upper right were revealed under ultraviolet light. Inspection under ultraviolet light also showed retouching to the aforementioned craquelure, especially over Semele’s bent leg. Additional minor retouches in Semele’s chest and a line of strengthening to the contour of her neck and shoulder were visible. The painting presents well overall and is offered in a black and giltwood frame.
