Ce masque dan compte parmi les œuvres d’art africain les plus remarquables de la collection Karin et Leo van Ooosterom. Véritable chef-d’œuvre en son genre, il est d'autant plus impressionnant que sa puissante présence est condensée dans les limites de sa taille miniature. Les yeux fendus et allongés et la grande bouche triangulaire sont disproportionnés par rapport au reste du visage, ce qui, associé aux traits émaciés, accentue l'expressivité vive du masque. Son ancienneté couplée à son utilisation cérémonielle ont contribué à sa patine lisse semblable à du cuir, dont l'arrondissement des bords et l'aplanissement des surfaces avant et arrière.

This Dan mask is among the most remarkable African works of art in the Leo and Karin van Oosterom collection, and a true masterpiece of the genre. It is all the more impressive as its powerful presence is condensed within the limits of its miniature size. The elongated slit eyes and the large triangular mouth are out of proportions compared to the rest of the face, which, alongside the emaciated features, only enhances the vividness of the mask’s expression. Age paired with multigenerational ceremonial use have contributed to its smooth, leatherlike patina, the rounding of the edges and the flattening of both the front and back surfaces.
