The firms of Brédillard and Dagonneau in Paris, with their factories in Geneva, were among the first suppliers of movements for Cartier's table clocks. From 1904 Cartier were using movements made by Prévost, and this workshop was soon undertaking the bulk of Cartier's commissions. Just as Cartier's contemporary's garland style jewellery was inspired by 18th century design, so from 1901 onward table clocks took the form of garlanded urns in pure Louis XVI style. With bodies of marble, hardstone or porcelain, they were clearly related to the pendules à cercles tournants of the late 18th century. The clock movement, set horizontally in the body of the urn, drove a rotating band dial, as demonstrated on lot 92.

A lifetime of collecting - A Collection of 101 Cartier Clocks
- Overall condition good. Traces of tarnish and scratches throughout. With winding key. Gross weight: 1587 gr. - O.Bachet & A. Cartier, 2020, expertise no. BC2003-21: Urn clock, Cartier Paris, 1904. Particularity: this clock is one of the first models of Cartier's clock production in the Neo-Classical style. It is very close to XVIIIth century designs unlike later examples of the urn design which are smaller and made of guilloché enamel. The use of dark blue opaline glass further emphasizes the XVIIIth century aspect as it was used in ceiling lamps. This version has a twin, and other versions were made in a variety of marbles - two examples in blue turquoise (one of which was sold to J.P.Worth), two examples in brêche d'Alep, and two examples in brocatelle d'Espagne. This clock, although it does not bear the hallmark of a master goldsmith, can however be attributed to Victor Leneuf (workshop located at 15 rue du Poitou in Paris and active between 1885 and 1935) whose hallmark appears on two similar Cartier clocks. - Signed Cartier Paris. - Service recommended. - The opaline glass in good condition, a few scratches throughout. - The enamel in good condition, small scratches and some black spots. - Movement ticking at time of cataloguing, working order and timekeeping cannot be guaranteed at time of purchase. - Please see Important Notice at the back of the catalogue for all clocks and watches and regarding coloured stones.
