MATISSE, Henri (1869-1954)

“Matisse designed six covers for Verve using his brilliantly colored paper cutouts, the famous papiers découpés that would later be epitomized by Jazz. Right from the beginning, he was thinking about how to ensure the purity and intensity of his colors and even went so far as to construct his collages out of papers he found in specimen books of printer’s ink manufacturers...Published in 1958, the orange Verve became a posthumous tribute to Matisse with articles on his work and lithograph reproductions of some of his gouache cutouts executed during the 1950s” (Bidwell, Graphic Passion : Matisse and the book arts, pp. 145-146).

Colorful and lively work by Matisse from the renowned French magazine Verve.
