Lot Essay

George M. Howe (active,1856-1860) worked at 112 Middle Street in Portland, Maine, from 1852-1860.The two daguerreotypes in the Maillet Collection are each singular works—a strong view of a ship in dry dock, in Portland, with men on the rigging, and a black woman holding a presumed deceased infant, with delicate hand-tinting in front of a painted backdrop. His work can be found in the Maine Historical Society collection. Source: Craig's Daguerreian Registry.
