Lot Essay

Phillipe Fortuné Durand (1798-1876) opened a studio in Lyon, France in 1840, and is considered one of the first professional French photographers. An engraver by trade, his work often depicts the city of Lyon and its transformation.

The seven sixth-daguerreotypes in this grouping were all purchased together from a French dealer in the 1980s. They depict various views of Lyon, including two outdoor portraits, one of which may very well be Durand himself.
