JEAN-HIPPOLYTE FLANDRIN (1809-1864), PORTRAIT OF ALEXANDRE FÉLIX LEGENTIL (1821-1889), OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, SIGNED AND DATED (UPPER RIGHT)

'Of all the works by Monsieur Ingres, Monsieur Flandrin is perhaps the most beautiful', wrote the journalist Jules Janin (1804-1874) in L'Artiste in 1839 in his article of the artist of the present portrait and its pendant (lots 225 and 226) (see C. Lanvin, Les frères Flandrin, Paris, 1984, p. 25). The most brilliant of Ingres's pupils (1780-1867), Flandrin entered his studio in the 1830s, and was soon to distinguish himself as a talented successor to the painter from Montauban. His portraits, which, to quote Champfleury (1821-1889), ‘you have to look at for a long time for the flesh to seem to take on life, so powerful is the drawing’, earned him comparisons with Ingres, but also with the Florentine Renaissance through the quiet nobility he offered his models (see C. Lanvin, 1984, op. cit., p. 29).
In 1858, he undertook the difficult task of painting Marie Legentil, née Marcotte d'Argenteuil (1828-1920 - lot 226), and her husband, Alexandre Legentil (1821-1889 - lot 225), both close friends of Ingres. Marie had previously been drawn at the age of sixteen months by Ingres (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, inv. no. 1966.80.7) and again in 1846, just a few months before her marriage to Alexandre Legentil (anonymous sale, Christie's, London, 7 July 2009, lot 56 - figs. 1 and 2). A few years later, it was Flandrin's turn to immortalise these two important patrons with whom he was also to become associated. Two preparatory drawings for these portraits are now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (inv. nos. 1991-24-50 and 1991-24-76).


A very pious artist who had worked on the decoration of numerous churches in Paris (Saint-Germain-des-Prés; Saint-Vincent-de-Paul), the painter it was not odd that he should appeal to Alexandre Legentil, who was also a loyal supporter of the Church. In fact, Legentil was one of the initiators of the project to build the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Montmartre, succeeding in getting the National Assembly to vote in favour of its construction through a public interest law in 1873. The heart of Alexandre Legentil still rests in the crypt of the basilica.

'De tous les ouvrages de Monsieur Ingres, Monsieur Flandrin est peut-être, le plus bel ouvrage' écrivait à propos de l’auteur de nos deux portraits (lots 225 et 226) le journaliste Jules Janin (1804-1874) dans L’Artiste en 1839 (voir C. Lanvin, Les frères Flandrin, Paris, 1984, p. 25). Le plus brillant des élèves d’Ingres (1780-1867), entré dans son atelier dans les années 1830, allait en effet rapidement se distinguer comme un talentueux successeur du peintre de Montauban. Ses portraits 'qu’il faut regarder longtemps, pour que les chairs semblent prendre de la vie, tant le dessin a de la puissance' pour citer cette fois Champfleury (1821-1889) (voir C. Lanvin, 1984, op. cit., p. 29) lui avaient valu des comparaisons avec son maître, mais également des rapprochements avec la Renaissance florentine par la noblesse tranquille qu’il offrait à ses modèles.

En 1858, il s’est employé à la tâche difficile de représenter des proches de son maître Ingres, Marie Legentil, née Marcotte d’Argenteuil (1828-1920 – lot 226), et son mari, Alexandre Legentil (1821-1889 – lot 225). Marie Legentil avait par ailleurs été dessinée à l’âge de seize mois par Ingres (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, no. inv. 1966.80.7) et à nouveau en 1846, quelques mois seulement avant son mariage avec Alexandre Legentil (vente anonyme, Christie’s, Londres, 7 juillet 2009, lot 56 - figs. 1 et 2). Quelques années plus tard, il revenait à Flandrin de se charger d’immortaliser ces deux importants mécènes avec qui il allait également se lier. Deux dessins préparatoires à ces portraits sont aujourd’hui conservés au musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon (nos. inv. 1991-24-50 et inv. 1991-24-76).

Artiste très pieux ayant œuvré à la décoration de nombreuses églises à Paris (Saint-Germain-des-Prés ; Saint-Vincent-de-Paul), le peintre chrétien ne pouvait que plaire à Alexandre Legentil, également fidèle soutien de l’Église. Legentil fût en effet l’un des initiateurs du projet de construction de la basilique du Sacré-Cœur à Montmartre, parvenant à faire voter à l’Assemblée nationale sa construction par une loi d’intérêt public en 1873. Le cœur d’Alexandre Legentil repose d’ailleurs encore aujourd’hui dans la crypte de la basilique.
