This depiction of an imaginary interior is striking in its poetic emptiness. It is similar to other interior scenes given to an artist known as the ‘Monogrammist PW’ (see for instance, anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 6 July 2017, lot 130). Though this might refer to a number of Dutch artists, the most plausible hypothesis identifies him as Pieter Willemsz. (van der Stock?), a name found in various Amsterdam inventories between 1636 and 1651, in which ‘architectural perspectives’ by a Pieter Willemsz. were listed, sometimes specified as being without figures (see A. Bredius, Kùnstler-Inventare, The Hague, 1917, p. 958). His works are, however, not always devoid of staffage, ones have appeared on the art market with the figures painted by other Dutch artists such as Willem Duyster (1599-1635) (see anonymous sale, Sotheby's, Paris, 27 June 2013, lot 17) or Hendrick Pot (1580-1657).

Cette représentation d’un intérieur imaginaire frappe par la poésie étrange de son vide. Elle se rapproche d’autres vues d’intérieur similaires données à un artiste au nom d’usage de 'monogrammiste PW' (voir notamment pour une version monogrammée, vente anonyme, Londres, Sotheby’s, 6 juillet 2017, lot 130). Ce monogramme pourrait renvoyer à différents artistes hollandais mais l’hypothèse la plus vraisemblable l’identifie comme Pieter Willemsz. (van der Stock ?), un nom que l’on retrouve dans différents inventaires réalisés à Amsterdam entre 1636 et 1651 dans lesquels des 'perspectives architecturales' par un Pieter Willemsz. étaient listées parmi d’autres peintures d’intérieur, parfois également inanimées (voir A. Bredius, Kùnstler-Inventare, La Haye, 1917, p. 958). Certaines de ses compositions passées sur le marché de l’art peuvent néanmoins être agrémentées de personnages, peints par d’autres artistes hollandais comme Willem Duyster (1599-1635) (voir vente anonyme, Sotheby's, Paris, 27 juin 2013, lot 17) ou Hendrick Pot (1580-1657).

Le tableau est peint sur un panneau de chêne, de deux planches, non parqueté, biseauté.
Le panneau est parfaitement stable et la matière picturale l'est également.
A l'oeil nu, le tableau se présente dans un bon état de conservation général. On constate des départs de fentes sur la partie droite du panneau d'environ 2,5 cm.
Certaines parties brunes (les solives du plafond, les pieds de la table notamment) semblent avoir été légèrements renforcées par le passé. De même, certains gris (comme la nape posée sur la table) semblent avoir été légèrement renforcés par le passé et ont légèrement viré.
A l'UV, on constate les restaurations précédemment mentionnées (pieds de la table, nape et craquelures sur la droite) ainsi que des restaurations ponctuelles dans la partie gauche (le long du bord supérieur, dans le fronton au-dessus de la porte) ainsi que dans le dallage.
Le tableau est sous un vernis fin uniforme.

The painting is painted on a two-board, bevelled, uncradled oak panel. The panel is perfectly stable, as is the paint.
In natural light, the the painting appears in a generally good state of conservation. Some hairline cracks can be seen to the right-hand side of the panel each measuring approximately 2.5 cm. Certain brown areas (the ceiling joists and the table legs in particular) appear to have been slightly reinforced in the past. Similarly, some greys (such as the cloth on the table) appear to have been retouched in the past, these have slightly discoloured with age. Under UV, the restorations mentioned above can be seen (table legs, cloth and cracks on the right) as well as some minor scattered retouching to the left (along the upper edge, in the pediment above the door) and in the paving. The painting is under a thin, even varnish.
In a modern 17th century Dutch style wooden frame (approx. 86 x 60 x 6 cm).
