Embossed and chased with a foliate friese repeated on the cover, the tapered body chased with large acanthus leaves and buds, the auricular handle centred by a grotesque mask pulling its tongue out, the hinged cover with swan finial on calyx, marked underneath: town and maker

This opulent acanthus-leaf motifs and the unusual cast handle with its grotesque sticking out his tongue can be found on another tankard dated 1690-1700 illustrated in E. Schlieman, p. 128, No 217 (op. cit.), from a private collection, sold in Auktion 461, Leo Spik, Berlin, 1967.
