JEAN-BAPTISTE PILLEMENT, LANDSCAPE WITH PEASANTS BESIDE A RIVER, SIGNED AND DATED, OIL ON CANVAS

This elegant painting is characteristic of the work of Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808), who charmed all of 18th century Europe with the delicacy of his colouration. A great traveller, he left his native Lyon at a very young age. At just seventeen, he left for Spain and Portugal, where he refused the title of Painter to the King. His numerous commissions later took him to Poland and the court of King Stanislas II (1732-1798), to London, where he exhibited at the Society of Artists and the Free Society of Artists, and to Vienna, where he worked for the Prince of Lichtenstein, before finally returning to Paris.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the present painting belonged to Frederick J. Quinn, an Irish wine merchant who put together a large collection of Old Master Paintings in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland. At the time, when Ireland was still under the protestant English yoke, Quinn was one of the only Catholics to own a large house in the area.

Ce tableau élégant est caractéristique de l’œuvre de Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728-1808), qui enchantait toute l’Europe du XVIIIe siècle avec la délicatesse de ses coloris. Grand voyageur, il quitte très jeune sa ville de Lyon. À peine âgé de dix-sept ans, il part pour l’Espagne puis le Portugal, où il refuse le titre de peintre du Roi. Ses nombreuses commandes l’emmèneront par la suite en Pologne, à la cour du roi Stanislas II (1732-1798), à Londres, où il exposera à la Society of Artists et à la Free Society of Artists, et à Vienne, où il travaillera pour le prince de Lichtenstein, avant de finalement revenir à Paris.

Au début du XXe siècle, ce tableau appartenait à Frederick J. Quinn, marchand de vin irlandais, qui avait amassé une importante collection de maîtres anciens à Clonmel, dans le comté de Tipperary en Irlande. À l’époque, quand l'Irlande était toujours sous le joug anglais protestant, Quinn était un des rares catholiques qui possédait une grande maison dans la région.
