PHILIPS WOUWERMAN, SOLDIERS RESTING, OIL ON PANEL, MONOGRAMMED

Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668)'s work as a painter of horses is characterised by a range of landscapes, battles and hunting scenes in which the figures' mounts play an important role. The pupil of Frans Hals (1580/1583-1666) depicts horses with great skill, whether they are at rest or in motion. In the context of the Thirty Years' War, the depiction of these animals is not insignificant: they are emblematic of the heroic feeling that inhabited the imagination of the Dutch, whose recent independence was sealed after long conflicts.

In our painting, the soldiers take advantage of a pause to play a game of dice, either crouching or lying on their stomachs. On the right-hand side of the composition are their four mounts, whose musculature and harnessing are skillfully depicted. This work recounts the daily life of Dutch soldiers for whom war was the only way to assert their independence from the Holy Roman Empire and the Spanish monarchy. The art historian John Smith places this work in the artist's early 'Bamboccio' style of painting, named after Pieter Jacobsz. van Laer (1599-1642), whose typically modest Dutch scenes of popular life strongly influenced Wouwerman (J. Smith, op. cit., p. 276).

Peintre de chevaux, l’œuvre de Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) se caractérise par un éventail de paysages, de batailles et de scènes de chasse où les montures des personnages occupent une place prépondérante. De toute race, au repos ou en mouvement, l’élève de Frans Hals (1580/1583-1666) dépeint les chevaux avec une grande habileté. Dans le contexte de la Guerre de Trente Ans, représenter ces animaux n’est pas anodin : ceux-ci sont emblématiques du sentiment héroïque qui habite l’imaginaire des Hollandais dont la récente indépendance fut scellée après de longs conflits.

Dans notre tableau, des soldats profitent d’un arrêt pour se prêter, accroupis ou couchés sur le ventre, au jeu des dés. Sur la droite de la composition figurent leurs quatre montures dont la musculature et le harnachement sont représentés avec habileté. Cette œuvre narre le quotidien des soldats hollandais pour qui la guerre est l’unique moyen d’affirmer leur indépendance face au Saint-Empire et à la monarchie espagnole. L’historien de l’art John Smith situe cette œuvre dans la première manière de peindre de l’artiste ou manière 'Bamboccio', du surnom de Pieter Jacobsz. van Laer (1599-1642) dont les scènes de la vie populaire au caractère modeste typiquement néerlandais influença fortement Wouwerman (J. Smith, op. cit., p. 276).
