MAURITIUS-HEINRICH LODER (1728-1793), PORTRAIT OF A MAN WEARING A HAT, THREE-QUARTHER-LENGTH, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNED AND DATED

This elegant tronie-like portrait of a young man dressed in an extravagant costume has long posed a problem of attribution. Signed ‘Loder’, it was catalogued as being by Matthäus Loder (1781-1828) when it first appeared on the market in 2001. However, the date 1760 next to the signature belies this attribution to the Austrian artist.

Instead, the painting is thought to be by Mauritius-Heinrich Loder (1728-1793), a German painter born in Mainz who worked in Wallonia, living in the Château de Franc-Warêt near Namur. It was for the Cathedral of Saint-Aubin in Namur that he painted his greatest work, The Adoration of the Shepherds, also dating to the 1760s. The restorations carried out on the latter in 2012 may have even allowed for a face to be attached to his name, as the artist is thought to appear in the painting, on the right, with a beard and moustache, and wearing a typical Mainz Bärenmütze, which resembles the hat worn by the young man in our painting.

Cette élégant portrait s'apparentant à une tronie d’un jeune homme vêtu d’un costume extravagant a longtemps posé un problème d’attribution. Signé 'Loder', il a été catalogué comme étant de la main de Matthäus Loder (1781-1828) quand il est apparu sur le marché pour la première fois en 2001. Or, la date de 1760, qui se lit aux côtés de la signature dément cette attribution à l’artiste autrichien.

Le tableau serait plutôt de la main de Mauritius-Heinrich Loder (1728-1793), peintre allemand né à Mayence, qui travaillait en Wallonie, habitant le château de Franc-Warêt près de Namur. C’est pour la cathédrale de Saint-Aubin à Namur qu’il peint son plus grand tableau, L’Adoration des Bergers, datant lui aussi des années 1760. Les restaurations effectuées sur ce dernier en 2012 ont finalement permis de donner un visage au peintre. Il figurerait sur le tableau, à droite, portant barbe et moustache, et coiffé d’un Bärenmütze typique de Mayence qui ressemble au chapeau porté par le jeune homme de notre tableau.
