GEROLAMO INDUNO (1825-1890), THE MUSIC LESSON, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, SIGNED AND DATED, INSCRIBED (ON THE REVERSE)

With The Music Lesson Gerolamo Induno (1825-1890) embarked on a new phase in his career, leaving behind his great military paintings of the 1950s and 1960s, a period during which he also distinguished himself as a soldier in the campaigns of Giacomo Medici (1817-1882) and Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882). Here, the artist begins a turn towards the neo-rococo, plunging the viewer into the world Boucher's (1703-1770) chinoiseries, and Fragonard's (1732-1806) gallant intrigues.

The painting shows a young music teacher gazing lovingly at his beautiful student, provocatively dressed in red; next to them, their chaperone slumbers. This type of subject was very popular with a bourgeois public that wanted to forget the rebellious years of the Risorgimento and return to a more frivolous world. Induno, one of the most gifted protagonists of this school, introduced comic overtones into his scene: the young woman's mocking expression and the little dog, a symbol of fidelity, who carefully doesn't face the couple, suggest that this is a love story to be viewed with an ironic eye. However, the most subtle reference for the discerning viewer is undoubtedly the score by Cimarosa (1749-1801), the Italian opera buffa composer. Dated “1800”, the penultimate year of the composer's life, this was the year that he wrote Artemisia, an opera that follows the story of Artemisia, Queen of Caria, who suffers the attentions of unwanted suitors.
