The young woman in the present portrait heralds the romantic fashions of the 1830s. She wears a low-cut, boat-neck bodice and a hairstyle nicknamed ‘à la Mancini’, with large curls rising from a central parting. A fine example of this type of hairstyle can be seen in the portrait of Madame Dobrée by Isidore Péan du Pavillon (1790-1856), painted in circa 1833 (Musée Dobrée, Nantes).

A NOTE ON THE ARTIST - BOILLY, INVENTOR OF SERIAL PORTRAITURE

Boilly (1761-1845) was the best, and perhaps most peaceful chronicler of a very turbulent period in French history, spanning from the end of the Ancien Régime to the beginning of the 19th century. He produced works of great sensitivity, though not devoid of a certain mockery, during each successive regime - the Revolution, the short-lived First Republic, the Directoire, the Consulate, the Empire, the Restoration and the July Monarchy – providing a very accurate snapshot of his century.

After the Revolution, with the weakening of the central power that had previously commissioned large-scale works that often took years to produce, many artists found themselves in a rather precarious situation. Boilly approached this change with great intellience, observing the decline of the aristocracy and the parallel rise of a new bourgeois social class, urbanites with comfortable incomes but no privileges, and came up with a product, both accessible and personal, that he could offer this new market. His idea was to create a standardised portrait that would always have the same dimensions (around 20 x 15 cm), using a canvas prepared with the same cream ground, with the same brown background, and the same frame. He launched this concept at the Salon of 1800, where the artist had listed under no. 39 “several portraits, each painted in a two-hour session”. A clever publicist, Boilly gave his full address in the booklet: rue du faubourg Saint-Denis, près le boulevard, la 2e porte cochère à gauche. These portraits were an instant success, becoming a stable source of income for the prolific artist, who also continued to paint in other genres. His son Jules Boilly (1796-1874) maintained that his father had painted of 5,000 such portraits, and in the sale organised by Boilly in 1829 he claimed to have executed a scarcely less impressive 4,500. The exact number remains unknown.

Though fashions changed, and his signature frames became somewhat outdated over the thirty-five years he worked, people did not care, everyone wanted their portrait by Boilly. The fixed price, fluctuating only with inflation, attracted a very varied clientele, in an approach that could today be described as democratic. Lots 166 to 185 present a wonderful cross-section of this chapter in the history of painting, a precursor to the art photography that was to develop a few years later.

La jeune femme de notre portrait annonce la mode romantique des années 1830. Elle porte un corsage décolleté 'en bateau' et une coiffure surnommée 'à la Mancini' dégageant le milieu du crâne encadré par de larges boucles. Un bel exemple de ce type de coiffure est visible dans le portrait de Madame Dobrée par Isidore Péan du Pavillon (1790-1856) peint vers 1833 (musée Dobrée, Nantes).

NOTE SUR L'ARTISTE – BOILLY, INVENTEUR DU PORTRAIT EN SÉRIE

Boilly (1761-1845) fût le meilleur chroniqueur – et peut-être le plus apaisé – d'une période bien mouvementée de l'histoire française, la fin de l'Ancien Régime et le début du XIXe siècle. Exerçant avec tendresse, et sans omettre une certaine malice, son métier de peintre à chaque régime qu'éprouva le pays – la Révolution, la Ière et éphémère République, le Directoire, le Consulat, l'Empire, la Restauration, la Monarchie de Juillet –, il aura fourni une photographie bien précise de son siècle.

Après la Révolution et l'affaiblissement d'un pouvoir central qui commandait aux artistes des œuvres conséquentes, occupant des ateliers de grandes échelles parfois sur plusieurs années, les artistes ont pu se retrouver dans une situation assez précaire. Boilly comprit la période avec intelligence et observa la déroute de l'aristocratie contrebalancée par l'essor d'une nouvelle classe sociale bourgeoise, citadine, aux revenus confortables, mais sans privilège. Il songea à un moyen d’offrir à cette population un produit accessible et personnel. Lui vint l’idée de fournir un portrait standardisé qui conservera toujours les mêmes dimensions (environ 20 x 15 cm), les mêmes châssis, sur une toile à la même préparation crème pour recevoir un semblable fond brun, et qui s’accompagnera d’un même cadre. Le lancement se produit au Salon de 1800 dans lequel l'artiste fait inscrire au livret sous le numéro 39 'plusieurs portraits faits chacun en une séance de deux heures'. Habile publicitaire, Boilly précisa son adresse complète au livret 'rue du faubourg Saint-Denis, près le boulevard, la 2e porte cochère à gauche'. Le succès se propagea rapidement et devint une source de revenu stable pour ce prolixe artiste n'abandonnant pas par ailleurs le reste de ses talents. Son fils Jules Boilly (1796-1874) évoqua le nombre de 5,000 portraits réalisés par le peintre et la vente organisée par Boilly en 1829 évoque dans son avant-propos 4,500 portraits. Le nombre exact pourrait être une approximation du peintre prenant en compte son rendement journalier.

Que les modes changèrent et que les cadres furent dépassés durant les trente-cinq ans qu’il en réalisa : qu'importe, toute une société voulut son portrait par Boilly. Le prix plutôt fixe ne fluctuant qu'aux mouvements de l’inflation attira une clientèle très variée dans une démarche qu’on pourrait qualifier aujourd'hui de démocratique. Les lots 166 à 185 présentent un bel échantillon de cette partie de l’histoire de la peinture qui n'est pas sans évoquer la photographie à venir quelques années plus tard.
