LUCAS VAN VALCKENBORCH (CIRCA 1535-1597), ADAM AND EVE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN, OIL ON PANEL, INDISTINCTLY SIGNED AND MONOGRAMMED

The second chapter of Genesis was a theme often chosen by painters of the 16th-century Flemish school because it allowed them to include different registers - human figures, animal figures and landscape - within a single scene. While some favoured a collaborative approach, with different artists specialising either in landscape or the staffage, others, such as Lucas van Valckenborch (c.1535-1597), produced the entire work themselves. Such is the case with the work shown here, illustrating the biblical story of Genesis 2:15-25. The Fall of Man is foreshadowed by the Serpent holding the fruit of Temptation in his jaws, and by Eve's gesture, holding out the forbidden fruit to Adam.

According to the painting's owner, Dr. Mirjam Neumeister has orally confirmed the attribution of the painting to Lucas van Valckenborch.

Le second chapitre de la Genèse est un thème souvent choisi par les peintres de l’école flamande du XVIe siècle car il permet d’inclure au sein d’une même scène différents registres – figures humaines, figures animales et paysage. Si certains privilégient l’approche collaborative au moyen du procédé de staffage, d’autres comme Lucas van Valckenborch (vers 1535-1597) en réalisent l’intégralité. Tel est le cas de l’œuvre ci-présente, illustrant le texte biblique du livre de Genèse 2:15-25. La Chute est préfigurée par le Serpent tenant le fruit de la Tentation dans sa mâchoire, et par le geste d’Ève, tendant le fruit défendu à Adam.

D’après le propriétaire du tableau, Dr. Mirjam Neumeister a confirmé oralement l’attribution du tableau à Lucas van Valckenborch.

Le tableau est peint sur un panneau de chêne composé d'une planche, non parqueté. Il est biseauté le long des quatre bords, et ne présente pas de courbure. Un élément de bois vertical d'approx. 7 cm, probablement associé à une restauration, a été inséré le long du bord inférieur. Des baguettes de bois d'approx. 6 mm de large ont été rajoutées le long des quatre bords du panneau. L'ensemble est stable.

A l'oeil nu, le tableau se présente dans un bel état général. Les figures d'Adam et Eve présentent un agréable rendu, et les éléments du paysage ont conservé la touche typique du peintre.
On constate de légères retouches ponctuelles ayant viré dans le paysage, principalement dans le ciel.
Le tableau présente un léger réseau de craquelures uniforme ne gênant pas la lecture de l'oeuvre.

A l'UV, l'examen confirme les retouches susmentionnées dans le ciel, et révèle une restauration plus importante dans le ciel à gauche d'Eve. L'examen révèle également quelques retouches ponctuelles dans les caranations, l'arbre central et dans le coin inférieur droit. Sous un vernis fin.

La matière reste stable.

Dans un cadre en bois peint noir (approx. 26,5 x 31,5 x 3 cm).

The painting is executed on oak panel made up of a single board. It is beveled along all four edges, and remains flat and stable. A vertical wooden element approx. 7 cm long, probably associated with a restoration, has been inserted along the lower edge. Wooden strips approx. 6 mm wide have been added along all four edges of the panel. The whole is stable.

To the naked eye, the painting is in good condition. The Adam and Eve figures are pleasantly rendered, and the landscape elements have retained the painter's typical touch.There is some light retouching in the landscape, mainly in the sky.
The painting shows a slight network of uniform craquelure, which does not interfere with the reading of the work.

UV examination confirms the above-mentioned retouching in the sky, and reveals more extensive restoration in the sky to Eve's left. The examination also reveals some spot retouching in the caranations, the central tree and in the lower right-hand corner. Under fine varnish.

The material remains stable.

In a black painted wooden frame (approx. 26.5 x 31.5 x 3 cm).
