Reinicke's Work Reports do not identify which Harlequin he was working on in April 1744: '1 Arlequin von gleicher Grösse angefangen' (Started to model 1 Harlquin of the same size), but it may have perhaps been the present model. Kändler himself notes that he corrected a model of Harlequin in the same month, see Meredith Chilton, Harlequin Unmasked, The Commedia dell'Arte and Porcelain Sculpture, Singapore, 2001, p. 309, see inv. nos. G83.1.923 and G83.1.935 for similar examples.

The model is loosely based on the engraving 'Habit d'Arlequin' by François Joullain from Luigi Riccoboni's 'Histoire du Théâtre Italien', Paris, 1728.

An example of this model sold Christie's London, 4 June 2013, lot 36.
