Lot Essay

The figures in this painting are taken from a series of prints documenting Ottoman life and dress, which derive from paintings by Jean Baptiste Vanmour. The latter were done from life during Vanmour's visit to Constantinople with the French ambassador in 1707-1708. Each of the three cooks and the man feeding the cats feature in the series entitled, Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes nations du Levant gravées sur les Tableaux peints d'après nature en 1707 et 1708 par les ordres de M. de Ferriol, ambassadeur du Roy à la Porte.
