Lot Essay

This painting can be compared with the composition by the Ottoman court painter Fausto Zonaro (1854-1929), held in in Istanbul's Dolmabahçe Palace. It celebrates the strategy developed by Sultan Mehmet II (1432-1481) that allowed him to bring his warships overland from the Bosphorus to reach the Golden Horn, well defended at its entrance by a system of chains, and thus bombard the enemy positions. This act led to the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans.
