Oil on canvas, lined. The varnish layers have been slightly disturbed below the centre of the upper edge. When examined under UV light, a discoloured and opaque varnish layer is visible. There are a few scattered areas of fluorescence, including: a vertical line of retouching with associated spots within the sitter's clothing running up from the right part of the lower edge and a few small other small spots within his clothing; a few small retouchings above the sitter's right shoulder and a small retouching towards the extreme lower left corner and a few further retouchings towards the upper left corner including above a retouching above the sitter's head, and a number of spots and lines of retouchings within the background in the upper right quadrant, most notably close to the extreme edges. Subject to the above, it is our opinion that the work appears to be in good overall condition.
