A prolific artist and skilled metalsmith, Toru Kaneko pairs a mastery of ancient metalworking techniques with a creative and modern aesthetic. His vessels are forged from a single sheet of copper and then hammered, punched and patinated to produce vases and bowls that challenge our notion of metal as being heavy and cold. The present lot appears as delicate and fine as paper, despite its imposing scale and presence. Kaneko's works have been exhibited internationally (Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Korea, and Finland and the United States) and can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
