The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This pair of paintings have been supported by glue linings on the reverse. The paint layers are secure under varnish layers that have yellowed somewhat with age. Both works exhibit an uneven craquelure across the surface. At the extreme edges frame abrasions and associated restorations are visible, most of this is hidden by the rabbets of the frames. Discolored restorations in the sky of both paintings are visible in natural light and in the catalogue images.
There is a small tear in the view with a flagpole at center, over the door way at lower right which has been delicately restored. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed strengthening in the darkest areas of the composition and scattered in the contours of the figure's clothes.
In the composition with riders exiting the village gates, restorations to a tear in the center of the sky are visible in the catalogue image and have discolored with age. Inspection under ultraviolet light revealed a campaign of strengthening to the the riders and horses at lower left, the dark areas of shadow in the landscape, and to the architecture at left.
This pair of paintings can be hung in their present state, but could be slightly improved by revising the discolored restorations in the sky to taste. The paintings are offered in matching carved and painted wood frames.
