The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is supported on the reverse by a glue lining. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed with age. Retouching is visible throughout the blue sky and the walls on either side of the arch. Scattered strokes of strengthening can be seen in the donkey and in the architecture in the distance. The still life scene and the seated old woman at right have been nicely preserved. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restoration and reveals additional scattered retouching throughout the figures and animals. Further inspection is hindered by an opaque varnish. This painting may be hung in its present condition and is offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.
