The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This painting is executed on a slab of marble. The stone measures about 1/2 inch in thickness. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed with age. Restorations to abraded and sunken pigments in the foliage and landscape, mostly at the at left, have been restored. A few further strokes of strengthening to the donkey are visible in strong raking light. A discolored substance is visible at the extreme edges, but this is usually hidden by the rabbet of the frame. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirmed the aforementioned restorations. The painting can be hung in its present state and is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
