The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This canvas is supported on the reverse by a wax lining. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish. Frame abrasions and associated scuffing can be seen on all four edges of the canvas. Retouching to the figure's nostril and the right side of his upper lip can be seen in natural light, an scattered areas of retouching that have discolored with age are visible in his armor just above the white sash on the right hand side, and in the background, particularly a small area just above the cuff of his left arm, and in the sky of the upper right quadrant. Scattered strokes of strengthening can also be seen, particularly in the dark folds of his sash, the curl of his right hand, the fleur-du-lis on his robe and the gold laurel leaves of his helmet at lower left. The shadow cast by his scepter and helmet at lower left onto the robe also indicates retouching. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned retouching, and reveals additional strengthening strokes in the figure's armor. Inspection under ultraviolet light also indicates a historic campaign of retouching, particularly to his ear and the black bow to the right of his head. This painting may be hung in its present state and is offered in a carved and gilt frame.
