The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This panel is made up of a single unbeveled board with a vertical grain. The paint layer is stable under a varnish that has yellowed with age. Craquelure following the grain of the panel is visible throughout. Frame abrasion and associated scuffing is visible on all four edges, but are largely hidden by the frame. A campaign of retouching in the flesh tones of the figures and their garments, particularly in Christ's body, is visible in natural light. Dark areas such as the rocks in the foreground and dark green of the patch of grass at lower left have been strengthened to address the pigment sinking. Minor strengthening can also been seen throughout the background, particularly in the rocks as well as the tree trunk at right. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restoration, but its opacity prevents further observation. The painting can be hung as is and is offered in a large carved Dutch style frame.
