Lot Essay

With their distinctive backs, these chairs relate to the oeuvre of the Florentine furniture maker of French origin Giovanni Toussaint (1747-1807). A giltwood chair with comparable back by Toussaint delivered for Palazzo Pitti in 1775 is illustrated E. Colle, ed., I Mobili di Palazzo Pitti: Il Primo Periodo Lorenese, 1737-1799, Florence, 1992, p. 168. A painted poltroncina, or small armchair, with very similar legs and knees attributed to Toussaint is preserved in the Villa del Poggio Imperiale, Florence (NCTN 00226954).
