Lot Essay

A two-stage Saturn 1B rocket carrying the Skylab 4 astronauts lifted off from Launch Complex 39B at 9:01 a.m. EST November 16, 1973, on the first leg of the third and final mission to the orbiting space station, berthed 270 miles above Earth. The crew flying in space for the first time consists of Gerald P. Carr, mission commander; Dr. Edward G. Gibson, science pilot; and William R. Pogue, pilot. They are scheduled to remain aloft 66 days during this open-ended mission, which could be extended to 85 days if ground controllers give the go-ahead. The astronauts will continue experiments conducted by two precious crews in the solar physics, Earth resources and medical areas.
