Lot Essay

The 'Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove' were a group of scholars who wished to escape the court intrigues and corruption in China in the 3rd century CE. The group would gather in a bamboo grove to praise works of art and find pleasure in simple, rustic life. The subject became a common theme in Chinese works of art and painting.
