Please note that after the catalogue was published Martin Royalton-Kisch has suggested that an attribution to Gerbrand van den Eeckhout should be considered. He notes that a similar treatment of the facial features can also be found in two drawings which have recently been attributed to Van den Eeckhout (see Benesch, op. cit., nos. 159 and 325; H. Bevers, Zeichnungen der Rembrandtschule im Berliner Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, 2018, no. 62; M. Royalton-Kisch, op. cit., Benesch 59 [http:/rembrandtcatalogue.net; accessed in January 2021], as Govert Flinck or Gerbrand van den Eeckhout??). He furthermore notes that the ‘tangle of lines in the hair’ can also be found in other drawings attributed to Van den Eeckhout (Benesch, op. cit., nos. 108 and 325), and that Eeckhout’s self-portraits show similarly prominent noses and that it should not be ruled out that this could be a self-portrait by the artist.
