拍卖场通告
Please note that after the catalogue was published Martin Royalton-Kisch has suggested that an attribution to Gerbrand van den Eeckhout should be considered. He notes that a similar treatment of the facial features can also be found in two drawings which have recently been attributed to Van den Eeckhout (see Benesch, op. cit., nos. 159 and 325; H. Bevers, Zeichnungen der Rembrandtschule im Berliner Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, 2018, no. 62; M. Royalton-Kisch, op. cit., Benesch 59 [http:/rembrandtcatalogue.net; accessed in January 2021], as Govert Flinck or Gerbrand van den Eeckhout??). He furthermore notes that the ‘tangle of lines in the hair’ can also be found in other drawings attributed to Van den Eeckhout (Benesch, op. cit., nos. 108 and 325), and that Eeckhout’s self-portraits show similarly prominent noses and that it should not be ruled out that this could be a self-portrait by the artist. We are grateful to him for his suggestion.

拍品专文

Benesch dated this rapidly drawn study to around 1636 and connected it with a group of small head studies (op. cit.,1973, nos. 327-336, figs. 396-406). More recently, Martin Royalton-Kisch has compared it to a drawing with multiple head studies dating the drawing to circa1632-1635 (op. cit.). Another drawing of a man, previously in the Victor Koch collection, shows a man whose face is rendered in a rather strikingly similar way; his head is drawn with bold outlines, quick hatching and his nose and mouth are both rendered with expressive penwork also noticable in the present sheet (ibid., no. 362, fig. 437, not accepted as by Rembrandt by Royalton-Kisch and Peter Schatborn).

We are grateful to Peter Schatborn and Martin Royalton-Kisch for their assistance in cataloguing this drawing.
