拍品专文

Although no corresponding more finished work by Gérard is known, the drawing appears to be an allegory related to the French Revolution, judging by the Phrygian cap held up near the altar at upper left. Gérard worked on several similar compositions in the mid-1790s (see L. Prat, Le Dessin français du XIXe siècle, Paris, 2011, pp. 69-70, figs. 130, 131).
