Portrait of Floris Mertensz van Alkemade:
This two-piece oak panel remains even and stable in its original frame, with restoration to the vertical panel join visible to the naked eye. There is a crack in the panel in the lower right, with associated paint loss, and some further scattered restoration across the surface, particularly below the coat-of-arms in the upper left. Ultraviolet examination reveals a streaky varnish, confirming the above panel join restoration as well as some restoration to the blacks and elsewhere. The streaky varnish preclude proper examination, however the artist’s expressive style remains highly appreciable.
Portrait of Lijsbeth van Hoeuff:
This single piece oak panel remains even and stable, with bevelling on three of the four sides of the panel on the reverse. Some thinning of the darker passages is evident particularly in the costume with restoration visible around the coat-of-arms and underneath and in scattered passages of the background. Ultraviolet examination confirms the above and reveals a streaky thick layer of varnish that prevents further examination.
