The painting is relined and stable on its support. The paint layer is stable and under a clear varnish that has yellowed with age. Under natural light, a repaired horizontal tear at the center right edge and extending approximately 18 inches towards his proper left shoulder is visible. There are scattered areas of retouching, including along the edges to address frame abrasion, and also a small area near the center upper edge. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned repairs and further scattered retouching to minimize the appearance of craquelure. The work should be hung in its present state. The painting is offered in a carved giltwood and painted frame.
