The canvas has been relined and this is providing an even structural support. The relining canvas is visible along the left and right edges where the original canvas does not quite reach the edge. These areas have been painted by the restorer to roughly match the original. Some of the impasto in the paint surface may have been impacted during the relining process, for instance in the foliage and in the clouds where the paint may originally have been a little more raised. There is a fine and stable pattern of craquelure in the paint surface, which is only really visible along the lower edge in the water. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals the remains of an old degraded varnish, which has been partially cleaned from the sky and water, but left in the darker tones of the foliage and foreground water. There is infill to the craquelure along the lower edge of the composition and scattered retouchings to frame abrasion along the outer edges, as well as minor scattered retouchings to elements of the composition, for instance the stone wall along the water’s edge. There would not appear to be any old repaired tears or significant damages to the original canvas.
