This painting supported on the reverse by a glue lining, which is protected by an additional canvas that is not glued down. The paint layer is stable under a clear varnish. A wide craquelure is visible across the surface and has been in-painted as seen in the catalogue image. There is an area of bubbling over the upper right corner and along the left edge of the painting, but the paint layer remains stable. A large L-shaped tear is visible over the sitter's proper right shoulder and extending horizontally through her décolletage. Repairs to this tear and to another adjoining tear, running vertically from the center of her chest to the top of her dress, have discolored slightly with age and are visible in natural light. Further repairs to the craquelure in the background, in the sitter's face, and hair, have also been restored. The aforementioned repairs as well as further restorations to the sitter's hair and background are visible under ultraviolet light. Further inspection was hindered by an opaque varnish. The painting is offered in a carved and giltwood frame.
